Since 1983, the Writing Center has been a free service for MSU students working on university writing assignments. The Center has experienced student and professional tutors to help undergraduate writers brainstorm, organize, and develop their ideas. Tutors also assist with understanding assignments, discovering research strategies, and polishing academic style. Tutors work with students through all stages of the writing process: from topic generation, to idea development, through organization, to revising for unity and cohesion. The tutors also look for patterns of error to help the writer to address editing and grammar problems.
The Center provides services to over 2000 students a semester, from a variety of disciplines. The Center employs 15 to 20 tutors. Graduate students, peer tutors, and professional tutors with graduate degrees and/or experience work with developmental, English as a Second Language, and upper and lower division students.
Student writers bring a copy of the assignment and a draft, outline, or just their ideas, and meet with a tutor for a one-half or one hour appointment. Appointments must be made in advance, as demand for tutors is often very high. The Writing Center has Internet access to help tutors help writers discover research strategies and access the MSU libraries. The Writing Center Computer Lab, located in Wilson 2-185, is equipped with fifteen computers and serves as a classroom for developmental writing classes. Student writers from other classes are also welcome to use the lab.
